07 Nov Why All Women Need Omega-3 Fats — at Every Stage of Life
With over 20 years in the nutrition industry, I’ve seen countless trends come and go — but one nutrient that consistently proves its worth for women’s health and family wellbeing is omega-3 fatty acids. Here we explore why all women need omega-3s.
These essential fats don’t just protect your heart; they help to balance hormones, support brain function, promote radiant skin, strong hair and even assist your body in detoxing and rehydrating. From fertility and pregnancy right through to menopause and beyond, omega-3s truly are a foundation for women’s (and their family’s) health.
💕 What Are Omega-3 Fats?
Omega-3s are essential fatty acids, meaning your body can’t produce them — they must come from your diet or supplements. The three main types are:
- ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) – found in plant foods such as flaxseeds, chia seeds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds
- EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) – found in oily fish such as salmon, sardines, and mackerel
- DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) – found in fish and algae, essential for brain, eye, and nervous system development
Together, these fats help to reduce inflammation, maintain cell membrane health, and support hormone, brain, and skin balance — all crucial throughout a woman’s life.
👶 Fertility and Pregnancy
Omega-3s, especially DHA, are vital for foetal brain and eye development, while EPA supports maternal circulation and mood.
Some research suggests that ensuring sufficient omega-3 intake during pregnancy may help to support healthy birth outcomes and reduce the likelihood of early delivery, although more research is needed. What’s certain is that omega-3s contribute to maternal wellbeing, foetal development, and overall pregnancy health.
Try: wild salmon, sardines, mackerel, or a high-quality prenatal omega-3 supplement (fish or algae-based)
🤱 Postnatal and Breastfeeding
After giving birth, omega-3s help replenish depleted nutrients and enhance breast milk quality, supporting your baby’s brain, eyes, and immune system. They can also help reduce inflammation, balance mood, and restore skin hydration — all essential for postnatal recovery.
Tip: add ground flaxseed or chia seeds to porridge or take a combined EPA + DHA supplement daily.
🧒 Children and Focus
Omega-3s continue to play a key role throughout childhood. Adequate DHA and EPA intake support brain development, concentration, learning, and emotional balance.
Some studies suggest that children with ADHD or attention difficulties may experience improvements in focus and calmness when omega-3 levels are optimal, though responses vary between individuals. Ensuring your child has regular omega-3-rich foods (or a suitable children’s supplement if needed) supports steady growth and cognitive health.
Try: tinned sardines on toast, scrambled eggs enriched with omega-3, or a child-friendly algae or fish oil supplement.
🌸 Reproductive Years (20s–40s)
During the childbearing years, omega-3s can ease PMS symptoms, support fertility, and maintain healthy oestrogen balance. They also help to reduce inflammation, keep skin supple, and enhance mental focus — ideal for busy, modern lifestyles.
Try: chia, pumpkin, or sunflower seeds sprinkled over salads, or a daily algae or fish oil capsule.
🌙 Perimenopause and Menopause
As oestrogen levels begin to fall, many women experience dry skin, joint stiffness, hot flushes, and mood changes. Omega-3s can help by reducing inflammation, supporting hormone balance, and protecting heart and brain health.
They also help keep skin hydrated and elastic, working as a natural ally for vitality and confidence. By moisturising the scalp and providing essential nutrients, these fats can improve hair strength and fullness.
Try: oily fish twice a week, or a menopause-focused omega-3 supplement containing both EPA and DHA.
My favorite Omega 3 supplement.
💪 Later Life (60+)
In later years, omega-3s continue to support memory, cognitive function, heart health, and joint flexibility. They may also help reduce inflammation linked to bone and muscle loss, supporting healthy ageing and mobility.
Try: mackerel, salmon, sardines, or a high-strength fish or algae oil supplement.
😃 Weight Management
Omega-3s can help with weight management by improving fat metabolism, reducing inflammation, enhancing insulin sensitivity, and influencing appetite. They may increase the body’s ability to burn fat for energy, help your body use and store glucose more effectively, and promote feelings of fullness, which can reduce overall calorie intake.
💧 Omega-3s, Hydration and Collagen Protection
There’s a lot of marketing around collagen supplements right now, but your body naturally protects and maintains collagen when the basics are in place.
Omega-3s help protect existing collagen by reducing inflammation and keeping cell membranes flexible — supporting skin elasticity and joint health. Combined with good protein intake, proper hydration, vitamin C and quality sleep for repair, this may be all your body needs to maintain strong, healthy connective tissue naturally.
So before reaching for the latest collagen powder, focus on what truly works: omega-3s, hydration, protein, and rest.
🌱 Natural Food Sources of Omega-3s
It’s easy to boost your omega-3 intake through everyday foods. Try including:
- Oily fish – salmon, sardines, mackerel
- Flaxseeds, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds – easy to sprinkle over yoghurt or porridge
- Walnuts – a convenient, heart-healthy snack
- Seaweed and algae – great plant-based sources of DHA
- Pasture-raised, free-range eggs – naturally higher in omega-3s than standard eggs, and a brilliant choice if you can buy from local small producers who prioritise animal welfare and nutrient-rich feed. Free-range chickens eat bugs and greens and get plenty of sunlight, meaning that their eggs are full of useful nutrients and omega 3 fatty acids.
✨ The Bottom Line
From pregnancy to menopause and beyond, omega-3 fats are one of the most valuable nutrients for women’s health and family wellbeing. They support hormonal balance, brain development, focus, skin elasticity, and overall vitality — while helping your body stay hydrated and resilient from the inside out.
Whether from real foods or a trusted supplement, omega-3s are a simple, natural way to feel energised, balanced, and radiant — at every stage of life.
